The journey behind Thom Bishop’s new album Train Leaving Dallas stretches from Nashville writing rooms to recording studios in Florida and Colorado, and finally to the streets, pubs and emotional landscape of Ireland. Scheduled for release on July 31st, 2026, the album brings together six original songs and six reimagined classics, with “Here Comes The Night” serving as its lead single.
Bishop and Billy Panda, his longtime collaborator, first wrote the album’s original songs while both were living in Nashville. Their shared history as writers and performers helped form the album’s central idea: to create original material with the staying power of classic songs, while giving familiar cover versions a fresh and contemporary identity. Bishop has summed up the project’s intention as a desire to “share some rock ‘n’ roll.”
The covers took shape in a more stripped-back way. Bishop recorded them alone with his Gibson L4 archtop guitar at Brian Shey’s home studio in Lyons, Colorado, capturing intimate performances before Panda expanded them with further instrumentation and production. The originals were recorded separately at Panda’s Studio P in Sarasota, Florida. Executive Producer Grace McKay also played a key role in helping bring the finished album into focus.
Ireland has become increasingly central to Bishop’s artistic outlook. While spending time there with his wife Michele during their daughter Simone’s studies at the University of Galway, Bishop became deeply inspired by the country’s relationship with music. He has spoken about the emotional authenticity of Irish music culture and the way American music is embraced there, particularly after witnessing the scale of Garth Brooks’ five-night run at Croke Park.
That sense of connection runs through Train Leaving Dallas. The album reflects Bishop’s American roots, his Irish heritage, his decades of songwriting and his belief that music can still carry meaning across generations and borders. It is a record about memory, movement and creative rebirth.
