A Home for UK-Based Musicians
The 606 Club has long been recognised as a venue that champions UK-based musicians. From its earliest days in Chelsea, it became a place where artists could perform, connect and be heard by audiences who valued live music. Steve Rubie, who has led the Club since October 1976, has explained that the focus on UK-based talent developed partly from necessity. In the Club’s early years, it could not afford to book US artists, but Rubie turned that limitation into a defining strength. Instead of competing directly with venues such as Ronnie Scott’s and The Pizza Express Jazz Club, the 606 created a distinctive role for itself.
